Sergei ZHUK

Sergei Zhuk obtained his BSc and MSc in embryology at Saint-Petersburg State University. The title of his MSc thesis was “Endothelial-mesenchymal transition as a model for studying the role of gene Notch1 in human aorta development”. After graduation, he studied interactions of haematopoietic and stromal cells at Almazov National Medical Research Centre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Then, he enrolled into the PhD program at the Biocentrum Vienna, where he analyzed the epigenetic silencing of viruses and performed forward genetic screens with CRISPR-Cas9. During 2019-2020, he worked as a research fellow in the group of Massimo Santoro at the University of Padova, where he generated and characterized KO cell lines using the CRISPR-Cas9 approach. As of 2020, Sergei worked at Almazov National Medical Research Centre, where he participated as a bioinformatician in the big project on the rare cardiovascular diseases. He performed SNP calling and variant characterization of panel sequencing and exome sequencing data and analyzed RNA-sequencing results. In January 2023 he joined NDAL as a bioinformatician. Sergei’s main hobby is playing chess.
